Modula is a premium wireless headphone in which sound quality, durability and perceived quality are no longer separate values.

Project Brief

Rethinking premium wireless over-ear headphones

Premium wireless headphones combine high-quality audio, advanced connectivity, and refined design. However, their increasing complexity often results in heavier products, limited repairability, and shorter lifespans, especially when batteries and electronic components cannot be replaced.

This context offered a starting point for exploring a more durable, repairable, and long-lasting approach to headphone design.

Research

Analyzing market and case studies

Market research, product benchmarking, and user interviews were conducted to understand the premium wireless headphone segment, focusing on sound quality, comfort, usability, materials, durability, and repairability.

The analysis revealed a recurring gap: advanced products often provide refined experiences but remain difficult to maintain and repair over time.

Design Direction

Translating research into product requirements

The findings were translated into a set of design priorities: long-term comfort, high-fidelity audio, intuitive physical controls, durable materials, and access to components subject to wear.

Rather than adding unnecessary features, the project focused on creating a product capable of preserving its functional, material, and emotional value over time.

Concept definition

A modular product designed to last

The concept developed into a premium wireless headphone based on a modular and reversible architecture. Each main subsystem, from the earcups to the headband, was separated into individual components that could be accessed, replaced, or upgraded.

This approach transforms the headphone from a closed electronic device into a durable and adaptable product platform.

Prototyping

Sketching and form development

Sketches and physical prototypes were used to progressively define the proportions, component relationships, and overall identity of the product.

The process explored different earcup geometries, headband connections, control layouts, and assembly solutions, ensuring that the final form remained coherent with the principles of comfort, modularity, and repairability.

Materials and construction

The material system combines anodized aluminium for exposed external surfaces with rigid polymer components and soft-touch finishes in areas that interact directly with the user.

Each material was selected according to its structural and sensory function, reinforcing both mechanical durability and the premium quality perceived through sight and touch.

Packaging

Communicating durability from the first interaction

The packaging was designed as an extension of modula’s values, using recycled Kraft cardboard, molded cellulose, and a reduced number of physical components.

A fabric case, repair tool, charging cable, and QR-based documentation complete an experience that introduces repairability and longevity before the product is even used.

Digital Ecosystem

Connecting product, repair, and community

The digital platform extends the product through spare parts, repair guides, upgrade modules, and a library of official and community-generated 3D files.

It also supports technical and aesthetic customization, allowing users to adapt the headphones to their needs and contribute to the product’s evolution.
